American Eclipse

American Eclipse

This fine painting of the famous racehorse “American Eclipse” (1814-1847) with his jockey and owner is boldly signed on the reverse, “Painted by Alvan Fisher Boston 1823″. In the distance is a racetrack. Fisher is noted as being the first American artist to paint race horses and is known to have painted five versions of “American Eclipse”, one of which is in the collection of the Munson- Williams-Proctor Institute. On the original stretcher is indistinctly written the name of the jockey, the owner, Cornelius VanRanst, and the horse’s name. In addition the piece retains an early handwritten label of the original owner, ‘Caleb N. Bement, Albany’ (1791-1868). The finishing touch to this exceptional painting is the original black painted frame decorated with gold stenciled leaves.
