Decorated Dower Chest
![]()
Though the decoration on this chest closely resembles that on Pennsylvania-German dower chests, this fine example was most likely made in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The architectural construction of the lower portion of the case with three drawers is unusual and the piece retains its original grain-painted background with polychromed decoration and robin’s-egg blue drawer fronts and moldings. The urns in the left and right panels are indistinctly initialed and dated 1806.
